Platters and Dishes

Shallow bowls, dishes, platters. When is a shallow bowl a dish, when is a dish a platter? There is a gradual transition from one to another that sometimes makes it difficult to classify items. No problem...just make a decision...erm...

Birch plywood and Afromosia
Wax finish.

Laminated birch plywood with a strip of afromosia make this a very attractive design. Putting modesty aside, I have to say that this is a very well made platter and one of my favourite pieces.

Stock No. 545

The ‘Big Bang’

Made from 237 individual pieces from 47 different species of timber, this platter took almost two years to complete. Click on the image for more information about this major piece

Beech
Wax finish

Beech is a sturdy timber, long used for household items and plates, dishes and bowls used to hold food. I mean, to eat from - stuff like soups and stew and porridge, not just as a bowl to hold fruit or salad, almost any wood will do for that. This particular platter is a bit too flat for soup and has some attractive figuring across the centre.

31cm dia x 3.5cm
(12¼in x 1¼in)

Stock No. 448

Birch Plywood and Oak
Wax finish

Another laminated piece, this time incorporating a strip of English oak towards one side. This is a much bigger piece than the one above and would make a striking centrepiece to grace any table.

50cm dia x 3cm
(19¾in x 1¼in)

£195 Made to order*

Beech and Sycamore
Lemon oil finish

A segmented piece, from steamed beech cut and rejoined using stained sycamore veneer between the pieces. The platter was then turned from the composite piece. The result is an unusual and very elegant small platter.

20cm dia x 2.5cm
(8in x 1in)

£95 Made to order*

Yew crotch platter
Wax finish

This shallow dish is made from the point where the trunk of the yew tree divided into two branches. The pale sapwood can be seen between the bark and the darker heartwood. Yew is one of the most beautiful of English timbers, and this piece does it full justice.

Approx 18cm high x 3cm thick
(7in x 1¼in)
